Welcome to this month's Scavenger Hunt. I am very excited to have an opportunity to host. My first hunt was Scavenger Hunt 13, and I just keep coming back!
These are extraordinary times we are living in and many of us won't be getting out much, so I hope the films in this hunt allow you a little escape. I'm excited to share this experience together.
For anyone who would like a chance at hosting the next Scavenger Hunt, you can join the Discord.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
For a comprehensive list of rules, please refer to this master list. The most important rules are as follows:
1. Make a list of 31 movies using the prompts below. Try to use at least 25 movies you haven't seen before.
2. Post a link to your list in the comments.
3. Watch as many of the movies as you can during the month of May. This can be in any order.
4. Try to review the movies you watch and mention that you watched them for the hunt. Tag your list and your reviews with "Scavenger Hunt", "Scavenger Hunt 62" or "Scavenger Hunt #62" to make it easier for other users to find them and interact with you.
My prompts can be roughly separated into thirds, with the first third having more topical prompts, moving into a series of prompts to encourage imaginative thinking, then finishing with prompts which are more personal.
Here are the prompts:
1. Parasite was a banger of a film in 2019. Watch a film featured on Rotten Tomatoes' "20 Movies to Watch if you Loved Parasite".
2. Towards the end of the decade, Letterboxd hosted a showdown for films considered to be Uncut Gems. Watch one of the 20 most mentioned films in the Uncut Gems showdown.
3. Everyone has their own opinion about who should receive an Academy Award. Watch a film starring an actor/actress who you believe will win an Academy Award for a future performance.
4. Happy Birthday to Richard Jenkins. A hidden talent and one of my favourite "Hey, it's that guy" actors. Watch a film with Richard Jenkins.
5. As a big fan of animation, I think many animators don't receive their due. Watch a film by either Bill Plympton, René Laloux, or Will Vinton.
6. It's easy to ignore movies not in your native language no matter how acclaimed they may be. These hunts are partly responsible for me experimenting with who I now consider to be some of the most masterful directors. Watch a film by Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, or Andrei Tarkovsky.
The next three prompts come together as a triplet. As I said, these are extraordinary times and it is difficult to ignore, so I wanted to reflect that in these prompts.
7. A little on the nose. Watch a film where some pathogen spreads through a population.
8. Many of us are living in varying levels of lock-down. As a result, we may be facing challenges we may not be familiar with. Watch a film that deals with the theme of isolation.
9. I have found films to be therapeutic when it comes to handling difficult emotions, particularly when it comes to grief. I wish safety to everyone, their friends, and family. Watch a film that explores mortality.
The previous three prompts might be a little heavy, so the next few prompts will wind things down and bring the movie medium to its purified liquid enjoyment.
10. We may be seeing less of it this year. Watch a film with most of its scenes at a beach.
11. Who else enjoys vibrant colours, the idea of a cool breeze, and the image of retro technology? Watch a vaporwave aesthetic film. To help with this, you can either refer to this Vaporwave Aesthetic list I have compiled or this Vaporwave Aesthetic list by Lyn Jensen.
12. Vaporwave should be a soothing experience, so this prompt is to get the blood pumping a little. Watch a film that could be described as 'high octane'.
13. In googling to prepare for this prompt, it seems like I may have made up the term 'slacker core' as it pertains to movies, but I think it's clear what I mean; a film which centres around slackers and the lifestyle, less Bill and Ted, more Clerks. Watch a Slacker Core film.
14. Finding out more about people and their passions can be surprising. Watch a film produced by Brad Pitt.
15. His work has been around for centuries and it is continuously being adapted in new and creative ways. Watch a film where William Shakespeare is credited as a writer.
16. As a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, it disappoints me that there isn't more Lovecraftian horror in cinema. However, a recurring aspect of Lovecraft's stories does make an appearance from time to time. Watch a film featuring a cult.
17. A good score can really set the mood for a film. This is especially true for horror, so why not experiment with a film which is only the score! Watch a silent horror film.
18. I hear stories about a niche indie company called Disney who are apparently doing pretty well these days. Watch a film featuring a story which has received the Disney treatment, but not produced by Disney Studios. Examples include the New World (Pocahontas) and the Thief of Bagdad (Aladdin).
19. Watch a film where characters play a game, but it's more than just a game.
20 & 21. Watch two unrelated films whose titles might suggest they could be part of the same franchise.
22. Possibly my favourite TV series is the original 1959-64 run of the Twilight Zone. Watch a film which could have been an episode of the Twilight Zone.
23. A film which is a not-so-guilty pleasure is Not Another Teen Movie. Made only better with Chris Evans' career trajectory following this film. Watch any film referenced in Not Another Teen Movie.
24. I love horror films and I love films which show their love for a genre. It only follows that I love The Cabin in the Woods. Watch a film referenced in The Cabin in the Woods.
One of the courses I enjoyed most at university was Gender and Sexuality. Aided by my love of fighting games, a main topic I focused on was the analogue between sexualisation and hypermuscularisation.
25. Watch a film featuring a pornstar in an acting role.
26. Watch a film featuring a wrestler in an acting role.
I live with my partner and twin toddlers, so I wanted to throw three prompts their way.
27. The prompt suggested by my partner: Watch a film with a teacher going the extra mile to reach a student.
28. Neither of the twins can speak coherently yet, however, one of them has a very clear motif. Watch a film featuring a dinosaur.
29. They're both very curious but one has more of a tendency to venture places he shouldn't be going. Watch a film about an explorer.
30. I can never get over the feeling of being able to share a film I really enjoy with someone else. Watch a film I have rated 5 stars.
31. Symbolic prompt for our last one. At the end of It's a Wonderful Life, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings" coupled with the joyful tune in the background never fails to crack me. One embarrassing Christmas I had to run to another room because I couldn't control the happy cry-face creeping onto the surface. Then I watch When Harry Met Sally and find the same joyful tune being used trying to evoke the same effect, marking an end which isn't really an end. Watch a film featuring the song Auld Lang Syne.
