Pate Duncan’s review published on Letterboxd:
Had multiple times during this where I legitimately considered running out of the theater bc of how much of it hit close to home. One of the most touching examinations of internalized homophobia I’ve seen in ages, treating the milestone of adult gay dating with the same gravity that coming out/coming of age dramas treated that specific queer milestone.
There’s something very compelling here about how the film handles unrealized potentialities, the supernatural conceit here working in a therapeutic mode (I think Personal Shopper is the comp I’ll make) that’s offset by a budding romance. Paul Mescal licks cum off of Andrew Scott’s chest; I don’t think y’all are ready for this one.
I’m still mulling over the ending, a final turn that I found a little bit too much for me, though I appreciate the final shot’s Mysterious Skin floating up into space and the sentiment expressed here about love’s supernatural quality. Going to be thinking about this one for a very long time.
