Every year on Letterboxd, an event comes along that brings the community together like nothing else. In its first year, it was just an open invitation for anyone who was up for a horror marathon during the Halloween season. Every year since then, it only got bigger and soon enough, it became an annual tradition on this wonderful site.
Hoop-Tober started as the brainchild of Cinemonster, born out of his love for all things horror & a homage to his fav filmmaker, Tobe Hooper.
Announced among friends as a month & a half long celebration of the spooky season, the real motive behind the challenge was to let folks enjoy & explore the world of horror some more. And boy did we have some fun back then!
The first edition was an instant hit. So much so that a second edition was inevitable. Those who took part in the first season wanted it. As it approached, word began to spread. More folks showed up. New rules were introduced to elevate the challenge. And to no one's surprise, it was another full house event. Soon enough, this vicious cycle took a life of its own. And the rest is history.
This year, we are in for the 7th edition of Hoop-Tober. And taking into account the horror that real-life has been in 2020, it's all the more welcome. Coz it is an attempt to regain the semblance of joy & togetherness that we lost this year. A festivity where we all come together, celebrate, rejoice & explore horror cinema with other friends & new folks without worrying about any quarantine protocols or safety measures.
To those returning again this year, Welcome Back! To those who are taking part for the first time, Welcome to the Madness! You have no idea how much fun you all are going to have in the next month & a half. And a special shoutout to all 7-timers who like me have been around from the start. If you're reading this, then help spread the word so more folks come aboard this bandwagon. Coz we go live from Sept 15th.
As before, I'll be starting my horror marathon from Oct 1st, once again aiming for 31 horrors in 31 nights: a feat achieved in all previous editions so far. And the following are the films I've chosen for my contribution to Cine's Hoop-Tober 7.0! Some of these entries may get replaced over the course of the month, depending on either my mood or their availability. And so, all the best to everyone. Do not forget to have fun, for that's what this festivity is mainly about. Let the screams begin!
