25 Best Films of the 19th Century

Film was invented in the 19th Century. When, where and by whom exactly are a matter of debate. The very definition of cinema comes into question. Nevertheless, these first movies consist of three types: animation, the "cinema of attractions" (fiction and nonfiction films), and scientific films. By the end of the century, the multi-shot story film emerged, but would not become the dominant mode until a few years into the 20th Century. Read my reviews for more information on the 25 films listed here.
