#17: 1 Lon Chaney film

I didn't actually watch LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, because it was tragically lost when the only known copy was destroyed in a fire. However, Rick Schmidlin and Turner Classic Movies pieced together a recreation based on set photos.

This was more like watching a PowerPoint presentation about the film than watching the film itself, so I don't think it's fair to give it a rating. I'm glad I was able to watch this and enjoy this piece of lost history.

That being said, what I saw was pretty mild. Despite Chaney's fantastic makeup, it's more mystery than horror. The plot is quite convoluted, and I understand why audience reactions were mixed. But I'm thankful for this loving recreation. I read that something like 35% of silent films are believed to be lost forever, and that bummed me out. Invest in physical media, make backup copies and pirate when necessary. We have to save our films.
