fun premise. miserable execution. i usually love movies where oooo everyone’s dark secrets get revealed ,, but these are not on the same level At All ?? comparing homosexuality to incest and pedophilia is crazy work. also some of the acting was laughably bad no hate no shade.

okay im SORRY god im sorry i thought this was really fun. i love cusp 90s/00s horror. i love insane drama. i love three plot twists in a trench coat. i love gay people. i love women who are cunts. And we always need more movies about women who are just fucking crazy like genuinely just CRAZY maladapted. its honestly a pretty stacked cast youll spend the whole time going what do i know them from ??? and Why are they acting worse than i remember? it was really stupid and i had fun SUE ME!!!!!

In an era of spoiled man babies dominating the news cycle, I gotta say that Taboo wears out its welcome pretty quickly. There is at least one son of a politician, who might be the most sympathetic character in the movie. As these annoying future 1%ers play a game that asks highly intrusive questions, people's darkest secrets come out. Everything is off the table as the movie progresses but it is slow. There is a twist but it wasn't enough to keep me on board.
Six friends gather one New Years Eve at a country mansion and play a game which consists of “yes” and “no” questions that are to be answered anonymously. . The questions are deeply personal, covering topics such as sex and incest. Once the cards are shuffled and the answers read out suspicions begin to grow among the group but it goes no further.
A year on and the group see in the New Year once more at the mansion, then the power goes out and a box arrives at the door containing six cards; written on them are the words, “prostitute, infidel, homosexual, rapist and hypocrite”. Recalling last years game, suspicions again arise about which term applies to which guest…

I’m happy to be the sacrificial lamb on this one. I was genuinely surprised no one on my friends list has seen this! However, Taboo is the cinematic equivalent of a New Year’s resolution that you break by 12:15 AM. While it tries to be a clever "whodunnit" where the most unassuming person is blackmailing the rest, the execution and acting is excruciating to watch. It’s got all the ingredients for a classic slasher, but instead of a thrilling countdown to midnight, it’s like waiting for a text from someone who doesn’t have your number.

Always assumed this was a cheesy post-Scream slasher flick so it was unfortunate to finally discover that it's an excruciatingly tedious psychological thriller gabfest about a group of rich kid friends (who all seem to hate each other?) uncovering all of their dirty little secrets (or TABOOs) over the course of a New Year's Eve get-together at one of their mansions. This could have still been fun in a Gossip kind of way but everyone just talks and talks and talks and talks... which will likely just lull you to sleep (it did for me!). It seems like the director was maybe trying to go for some kind of edgy Neil LaBute war-of-the-sexes type thing but clearly lacks the clever…
“Homosexual”, “Rapist”, and “Infidel” don't seem to be on equal grounds to me
April Fool’s Day meets Cry_Wolf meets House of Yes meets Cruel Intentions, and lacking all the charm and fun of all of them. Really falls apart in the second half. No set dressing, no table setting, all flash and no substance. Bleh. Could have been fun, but very much isn’t.
I feel like all you need to know about this is its an I Know What You Did Last Summer rip off that puts "being gay" and "having threesomes" in the same broad category of 'taboo' as statutory rape. Also, the big bad rapist (who is thankfully killed first) has only one other character trait, which is that he is Jewish and is very aware that the other guys in the group make fun of him for that. Just an absolute mess of philosophy here that largely leads to confusion as to what it is trying to say about taboos. Are they justified? Are they unfair? Is the very fact that queerness is as taboo as rape an indictment of our culture? Or is that just how it is? This movie has an "everyone sucks" approach that leans towards the latter, likely because it is clearly a rushed straight-to-dvd release.
I’d say “they tried” but… did they?
Sometimes I regret watching movies.
