Hooptober 9 from Outer Space
#12: 2 Christopher Lee films (2)
Shudder
Easily the foggiest-looking film I've ever seen. Foggier than THE FOG. Mistier than THE MIST. THE CITY OF THE DEAD is a gorgeous, atmospheric little jam that fits into that "cozy horror" subgenre I love. Atmospheric little jams that make you want to bundle up with hot cider or cocoa while watching.
Christopher Lee is fantastic as a college professor with a keen interest in witchcraft. Patricia Jessel is a witch who's burned at the stake but places a curse on the sleepy town of Whitewood, Massachusetts. I had to look up the actress because I thought she was Anjelica Huston, and I have to imagine she inspired Huston's performance in The WITCHES.
The imagery and atmosphere are definitely the strongest points of this film but the performances are solid too.
