Man, what a fucking downer this movie is!

I'm inclined to consider this a very well made film. It's interesting how polarising it's been, and most of the negative reviews seem to be outraged at its historical inaccuracy. That was enough for me to do a desultory little bit of research after the film so I could get a handle on what really happened, and it all seemed... quite accurate? Although I never got past reading the Wikipedia entry on Euronymous so, take it with a grain of salt, I suppose.

Metal was never really my scene, at least not by the time the 90's rolled around and black metal became a thing. Watching these guys, I can see why - has there been any less fun-looking subculture to be a part of than this? All they do is mope around talking about how evil they are and how great it is for bad shit to happen. Compared to these guys, the Goth subculture is like a glee club.

I think the performances are pretty strong - especially from Rory Culkin and Jack Kilmer. Emory Cohen is seriously fucking disturbing as Varg - you can tell this guy is someone best kept away from as soon as he meekly enters the narrative. It's hard not to find these guys unbearably stupid, but I think there's adequate context given as to why they make the decisions they do - at least on Euronymous' part. Many of these guys are plainly just dipshit psychotics, and I found dwelling in their orbit for two hours something of a draining experience. I already know how dumb the human race is - getting it laid out for me in graphic detail is a bit of a drag.

This is a decent movie, but I just wish it was shorter - if ever a film needed to keep it brief it was this one. It just wore me down. Urgh.

Dammit, another true crime film, that's three this HoopTober. Nope, just really fucking sad, man - yeah, even with these dipshits, it's sad. The suicide scene early on is one of the more disturbing things I've seen recently.
