”I get this ache... And I, I thought it was for sex, but it's to tear everything to fucking pieces.”
Even though the film starts off as an angsty teenage drama, soon everything turns for the worst and it becomes one of the most gnarly werewolf films that I have ever seen. Funny enough I feel like out of all the types of horror creatures (vampires, werewolves, etc.) I’ve seen the least amount of werewolf films and yet, they’re usually the ones that I prefer more than others. I’m not sure if that’s because it results in a much more scary and menacing type of film, but Ginger Snaps definitely fits that role.
What really sticks out to me is how much of a slow burn the film really is. As soon as things start to get bad, it moves up and up slowly getting worse and worse and watching it all unfold really makes for such an entertaining film. Both lead roles from Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle complement each other perfectly and their relationship is easily what makes it all work that much better. Watching the relationship strain and evolve to the finale makes the emotional moments worth it. As well as the fact that director John Fawcett worked wonders behind the camera as well as only wanting to do practical effects all come together to make Ginger Snaps a real solid werewolf flick.
