Hooptober... And Then There Were Nine

55th Kill

Oh God, I hate to admit it (not least because I laid out more than my usual allowance in quid for a nice blu-ray of this) but Twilight People just defeated me completely. It starts so well with lovely garish credits laid over some very beautiful underwater photography and a funky exploitation score. It's clear early on that this is another adaptation of The Island of Dr Moreau, and that's an immediate plus. And what did that say? Pam Grier as the Panther Woman. I'm so in!

Full disclosure - I could not stop falling asleep in this movie. At first I was cursing my frail aging human body, my inability to stay up late like I could in my salad days. I missed about 15 minutes of what was probably the crucual segue between second and third acts but...

It's just so fucking boring! There's some dialogue. There's a room where all the human/animal hybrids are kept. There are incessant scenes of them wailing and wauling and "scientists" feeding them, etc. There's a beyond-predictable sub-plot about the romance between the protagonist and Dr Gordon's (née Moreau's) daughter. I just couldn't muster the will to go back and watch it properly. And I watched an actual good movie after this and didn't fall asleep at all - so I'm blaming my narcolepsy on this movie, totally.

Hey, it looks beautiful. Pam Grier is in it, doing bad interpretive mime of a panther, as per the direction. You can't see her face because of the terrible special make-up effects. I like the bat guy because he always looks so startled and he gets some comical flying scenes. But overall this is just a disappointment.

Best Kill (may contain traces of spoiler)

There isn't one. I mean, I'm sure someone dies at some point, but nothing is memorable enough to earn the adjective "best". I can't fucking remember, OK?
