Hooptober... And Then There Were Nine

28th Kill

OK, just checking who won Australian of the Year in 1995... Arthur Boyd? What the fuck? What the hell did he ever do for Australia?! Can't even paint a realistic looking person! Meanwhile, we had Clive Turner creating this work of cinema genius which, as well as being one hell of an exciting werewolf movie, contains copious amounts of high quality country and western music; not one, not two, but THREE scenes of gratuitous line dancing; and a cavalcade of the finest dad jokes ever to grace a seedy American bar. Goddammit, how did we let this prodigious talent go unappreciated???

When my parents retired, they moved to a place on the coast and made a gaggle of friends. One of them had a video camera and some editing software, and one time when I went up for Christmas, my folks showed me this "movie" they had made. It's cool that they would all do that, but I can tell you, it was the weirdest collection of jokes and idiocy I'd ever seen - which of course made it awesome in its own way (my brother insisted on watching it about fifty times). Anyway, Howling: New Moon Rising reminded me of it so much. This is like a bunch of aging cowboy baby boomers making a home video. It's just so fucking weird - it does at least include a werewolf plot somewhere beneath all the appalling music and line-dancing and Clive Turner's incessant quipping (despite being the worst jokes of all time, he always gets a huge belly laugh out of everybody in the scene), but I'm assuming Turner bought the rights to use the Howling name for a hundred bucks because he knew a couple of the right people after playing minor roles in some of the earlier sequels.

Man, this was rough. It goes the full 90 minutes too - I felt every one of them.

Best Kill (may contain traces of spoiler)

Some people die in POV shots where the camera moves towards them and they shriek and fall over. I'm not going to dignify this with one of my (very coveted, btw) Best Kill awards.
