Oh, I loved this. It's such a fantastically stripped-back and understated film, which works so well with the content and the protagonist. Lili Horvát manages to create such a rich sense of atmosphere out of a feeling of lack; a sense of incredibly evocative and gripping near-sterility (which sounds like it shouldn't be a compliment, but in this case, it really is). The whole film is pervaded by a sense of off-ness that keeps you on your toes, even as the rhythms and simplicity of design lure you into complacency. It contains throwbacks to Vertigo on the one hand and Brief Encounter on the other, and you're never quite sure which it's moving towards; until the very end, it manages to evade categorisation and defy genre. Top it all off with a truly fantastic performance by lead actress, Natasa Stork, and some of my favourite camera direction that I've seen in a while, and you have a film that perfectly hits all my sweet spots. I can't wait to watch more from this director.
