Kevin Jagernauth’s review published on Letterboxd:
I'm from Waterloo, where the vampires hang out!
It’s genuinely exciting to experience Matt Johnson’s much deserved breakout moment with the funny, energetic “Blackberry.” Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton deliver revelatory performances in a film that makes the familiar rise & fall tech giant genre feel fresh.
Extra kudos to Jay McCarrol for the terrific score, perhaps one that could've been used more in place of a couple of awkward needle drops (Slint's "Good Morning, Captain" driving the leadup of a big pitch presentation is odd).
But that's just a minor (and personal) complaint. For years, Johnson has been Canada's secret despite going to Sundance twice (the underrated "The Dirties" and "Operation Avalanche") and earning some cult cred with "Nirvanna the Band the Show." But he better get ready, because with "Blackberry," everybody's going to be paying attention.
