In trying to grapple with this movie, I keep coming back to Taxi Driver. You have a protagonist who increasingly is radicalized, planned political assassination that gets ruined, God's loneliest man writing in his notebook, beliefs that society is rotten.
It also has some inversions: instead of being spurned, Reverend Toller spurns Esther; instead of blaming the common retch for society's ills, Toller blames institutions and the powerful; Bickle is disgusted by his clientele but the Reverend feels compassion for…
