In 1980s East Germany, physician Barbara (Nina Hoss) is punished for her request to leave the country by being sent to a remote clinic in a small town, where her assumptions are gradually questioned, in Christian Petzold’s drama co-starring Ronald Zehrfeld, Rainier Bock and Jasna Fritzi Bauer.
It’s told in a slow burn style, creating an understated atmosphere that hints at the menace just below the surface. The camera is often very still, often assuming a high-angle position that draws parallels with a security camera, making the viewer assume an almost voyeuristic status that links to the themes of surveillance and control.
