A group of teenagers win a trip to a summer camp they had attended as children. However, soon after they get there they begin to disappear one by one. The survivors suspect that the disappearances may be connected to the death of a handicapped child at the camp years before.

Twisted Nightmare may be a little formulaic but it gets an extra half star from me because framing any backwoods cropsey maniac manbeast in foggy blue lighting and having someone shoot him 17 times as he brushes it off will pretty much guarantee I’ll be all in.
A fun little gem with a solid soundtrack, decent kills, hysterical slow motion scenes, an asshole alpha guy who gets tanked and throws manchild hissy fits, and a killer I wish we saw more of.
I kinda dig it more every time I watch it.
If you received an unmarked card that only said “You’ve won a free weekend at Camp Whatever”, would you just go without question? Probably not because I doubt you’d know how to get there and isn’t camping pretty low cost to start with? Well, those little problems sure as shit didn’t stop the entire cast of this movie because all 20 of these people converge on this campground and realize they all used to be friends before some tragedy or something and THEY STILL DON’T SEE ANYTHING ODD ABOUT ALL OF THIS. So basically, yes this is absolutely my kind of movie.

Serves up all kinds of backwoods mayhem... a harbinger of doom who keeps cats in a barn, a useless sheriff, a doofy bar scene, Rhonda Gray slo mo screaming NOOOOOOOO while her brother burns up in flames, and all the sweaty guys play football in slo mo. All positives in my book—adding to the delightfully dopey charm that is Twisted Nightmare.
Gotta love the no budget summer camp slasher logic of the 80s—a cast of 28 year old porn actors wake up to unsealed notes next to their beds saying “You’ve won a free trip to camp paradise!”. They all shrug their tits and say “Not unsettling at all that this note just showed up next to my bed… or that this is the same camp I attended where my friend’s disabled gay brother spontaneously combusted after being tormented by all my pals! His body was tragically never recovered…Let’s go throw beer cans at hitchhikers and have a tubular weekend!”.

One of the best kept secrets of the 80s slasher genre. Bizarro 80s dream logic at its finest and every slasher trope played out in extra dramatic fashion. Wacky nonsensical plot, extra goofy teens, sleazy shennanigans, hilarious dialogue, clumsy supernatural elements, a score that greatly exceeds the movie itself and some truly tantilizng WTF moments. Twisted Nightmare exists in its own absurd universe. Boom shackalacka!

If only I could have seen the half of this movie shot in darkness, I would have been even happier. When the couple is killed in the barn -- yep, barns in slasher movies seem to send off some kind of alluring scent characters appear drawn to, like a moth to a flame -- and the film eventually returns to day, I was relieved. And then the film returns to night, and I audibly uttered, "Fuck". Because it was back to wincing hoping I could see what was happening...in the barn.

When you want a fun late 80's slasher, you can't do any better than Twisted Nightmare. The mullets and perms were in full force, the supernatural slasher era had a little life left in it, and high body counts are never a bad thing. So many people die in this fucking movie. The gore was plentiful too! Big shout out to Cleve Hall, who provided the special effects AND played the killer! He was pretty amazing as the groaning hulking menace. The cast is wooden as you'd expect. That's okay because they either get naked, brutally murdered, or both. The standout is Dean, the major asshole of the group. Dude had me rolling every time he was onscreen. To me, this is the perfect horror film for a party. You can bounce in whenever you want and won't miss a thing. There's literally a death every 5 or 10 minutes. It's pretty perfect.

7. Watch a movie about any sort of summer camp that doesn't take place on Friday the 13th
This movie is so incredibly 80's! Everyone has a mullet and the girls all have mom jeans. It will have you laughing from beginning to end. The performances are across the board terrible and cringe inducing. Dean "The Dream" is one of the greatest douchebags in the history of cinema. Many of the kills are quite gory and most of the characters are totally stereotypically presented. Gratuitous nudity with a shower scene, sex scenes and a hilarious sauna scene. For trash fans, my highest recommendation.
This is what happens when someone says “I can make a Friday The 13th movie better than Friday The 13th!”. There’s a dozen or so terrible actors and actresses, a camp site, some drama and sex, and of course a maniacal slasher killing everyone off.
There are a few bits that separate Twisted from Friday:
-The killer howls and groans like an animal.
-I think one of the kills is a guy getting stepped on. To death.
-Magic is introduced and one of the characters spontaneously combusts (note that “his body was never found” despite the fact everyone saw him on fire just feet away).
-At least part of the camp was built on an Indian graveyard. I shit you…
How can you not love a movie so committed to being a Friday the 13th ripoff that it goes as far as reusing sets from one of the Fridays (Part 3's Higgins Haven)?
Yep it's basically the unkempt hair guy, who you pretty much KNOW who it is, that's killing everyone, from the vhs cover with his arms raised up in the air ... like someone out for revenge from being burned by some other jerks like he just doesn't care.
Was considering this for a theme but whatever list I found it on doesn't seem to get that there's a difference between a camp movie and a camping movie so I guess I have saved me some money, at least. Anyway, it's not so much that some of the lines - such as 'I would die for these kittens' are spoilers since ... well, you know what kind of movie this is and more that, it's just honestly a weird thing to say.
I mean who doesn't like a barn full of kittens? Still ...
