Klondike

Klondike was the final film I watched at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, catching it during the Award Winners viewings. The film is very raw with some of the most haunting shots of the festival for me.

The cinematogrphy is the crowning jewel of the film, though I couldn't help but also be mesmerized by Oksana Cherkashyna's performance. Such a dominating presence in a chaotic world.

The story reminded of of an old Cival War drama were lines are blurred between good/bad and right/wrong sides. The film grounds itself around the pregnacy of Cherkashyna's character, and only adds to her powerful performance.

Overall the film fell short of true greatness for me though that final 20-30 minutes, particularrly the final scene was so haunting that it pushed it to the top of the festival from my viewings. A tough watch but one that was more than worth it. A film I'd keep an eye on for foreign film awards.
