Sundance #6
I thought Master was great, and it stuck with me long after my initial viewing, which made me bump this up a half-star
Why? This was my experience at a PWI damn near to the T, and it conveyed its messages so slickly from beginning to end.
It's not surprising that a lot of white critics are missing the point of the film. I don't think they really need to. But it's important to do your homework and/or at the bare minimum elevate the voices who do understand these films. And for heaven's sake not everything is a Jordan-Peele-esque psychological thriller...
Master has an unnerving atmosphere that Black people know all too well especially being the only Black person in a room. This social critique on micro aggressions centers on a legendary tale of a witch that comes to take the life of a black freshman every year - the perfect allegory for how these experiences are soul-wrenching.
What a great film. Regina is heavy sent, but what else is new.
