Colonial folklore jam that turns into a surreal dreadmare fable with naked mud ghosts, evil tree demons, decapitated cow heads with blood tears, and a richly dense atmosphere that’s 100% my kind of folk horror magic. This is a lost classic in my eyes, filled with images I won’t soon forget courtesy of interesting filters/camera tricks, and one hell of an ominous mood—fans of The Witch take note… I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Sometimes all you need is a rustle in the trees.
I really hope one of these boutique labels has this on their slate for a future blu release...

This had my eyes on fire. I felt like I was watching a National Film Board documentary in it's style only to have the rug swept from under me with this one.
So clearly this folk horror that deals in many realms of the magical cultural tales has it's interest in showcasing many different elements like the fallibility of men leading and creating wonder that not all magic is evil.
Sure it could have used a better budget but what they produced was pretty solid and worth checking out for it's smart practical material that I feel captures a real sense of mystery and eeriness but maybe that's because I'm from a bygone era though I feel it catches a vibe.
Totally worth checking out for those who like folk horror like "VVitch" with a tinge of "Meek's cutoff". I hope your eyeballs get some cucumber slices afterwords cause mine are burning!
I vividly remember this VHS cover from my days working at the video store, but it never drew me in enough to make me watch it. There was always something else I would pick instead like renting Night of the Demons 2 again or something.

Indeed, this folk horror film is so bizarre, nearly incomprehensible, and twisted that's almost impossible to take your eyes off the screen, particularly in the second half when tree people or whatever start drinking right from a cow's udder, or something like that. Once Nicole pointed out that a young Rob Paulsen was in this I kept waiting for him to talk so I could imagine Yakko Warner as a doomed frontiersman. Not only did he not have enough lines for me to do that but there were many, many shots of him looking like he was about to speak only to stare in silence. Started to feel a bit like a personal attack against me.
The horror of nature is burned into the narrative of Eyes of Fire - it's the epitome of folk horror, as we follow an ignorant bunch of people that fail to heed the warning of the native Indians and try to set up house in the land of the spirits. At first I thought I was watching some second tier version of The Crucible….and then then it got really weird, really fast and I loved every second of it! Mixed with unsettling imagery and a narrative that gets to the root of American folk horror, Eyes of Fire was a welcome discovery. Also, I’m sure Robert Eggers has seen this film a time or two.
I thank my lucky stars that I didn’t grow up in Colonial America 💀
