I've always had a soft spot for this overlong shitty slasher that thinks it's more clever than it is.
Someone has taken their love of s̶c̶a̶r̶y̶ m̶o̶v̶i̶e̶s̶ Jack the Ripper one step too far.
A post-Scream slasher about a Jack the Ripper copycat. Kind of a dumb movie - one that thinks it's more clever than it really is - but consistently watchable. Very early 2000s in its style, editing and music. I used to consider that a negative but I'll take it over the look of most modern movies. Recommended to fans of slashers from this time period but not to anyone else.
I really don't understand the bad reviews, I really don't. Personally, I thought this movie was really good! Not a masterpiece by any means, but it's not bad at all, really! It's a mostly ordinary slasher, but it does have some pretty surreal moments here and there, and the premise is very intriguing, and quite interesting!
This movie follows through with the basic tropes from films like Scream (obviously), Urban Legend, Cherry Falls, etc. It takes specific cues from those films. It adds a little bit of new elements here and there, but for the most part, it's pretty basic, and that's OK! Sometimes basic is all we need! There aren't many onscreen kills, as the film tries to build…
i hate on slasher movies when they kill the baddies first and keep the annoying men
This movie was a mess 20 years ago....and its still a mess 20 years later. It has aged very badly.
There must be someting seriously wrong with me, to be able to sit through this car crash of a film again all these years later.
Jack's my name. Jack whose sword never sleeps.
A Jack the Ripper copycat, criminology roulette of victims, creepiest teacher ever, Kelly Brook getting her cheeks clapped in a dirty ass bathroom, and a sequel to a movie that doesn't exist. Films like this remind us why a good editor is gravely essential for a movie - as well as a good screenwriter, and a good director, and a cast of good actors. Hell, pretty much every freaking thing. As a result from lacking practically all of those things, Ripper is a completely overlong cinematic slug of what should have been a tight, 70+ minute long whodunit slasher, instead of the near 2 hour confusing clusterfuck with what far and few…
This definitely overstays it's welcome, with a runtime of nearly 2 hours. No one ever asked for a crappy 2000s horror movie to be 2 hours long. No one wanted that.
AJ Cook stars as Molly, our cynical, goth who is recovering from a past trauma in which her friends were all murdered and she was the only survivor. She's now studying serial killers and members of her study group are dropping one by one. All of the murders are committed in a fashion that copycats Jack the Ripper slayings. The concept is fine but, honestly, Jack the Ripper is boring and never executed properly. His murders were vicious and brutal and the kills here are largely off-screen and edited…
It’s a decent teen slasher flick typical of horror movies from the late 90’s to early 00’s era. Bonus points for AJ Cook sporting a hardcore grunge look. This era had a thing for Jack the Ripper stuff. So they tried to shoehorn some Ripper storyline into a Scream-type slasher. Overall, it’s not great. But it’s worth watching if you're a slasher fan.
I wasn't anticipating much, but color me surprised because... this was actually decent?
It's a post-Scream slasher that hails from Canada. The filmmakers tried to disguise this film as somewhere set in California, but it was lazy. The newspaper at the end states "Oakland" so maybe it was the Berkeley hills? Or the final 20 minutes reminded me of Santa Cruz county. Whatever, it made no difference to the actual movie... the geographical location of the college just severely confused me, that's all. LOL.
The runtime is surprisingly lengthy, but it's never boring. The violence (and body count) is robust with a chock-full of suspects that keep the film's momentum going. I wish the third act was strong(er). There's a…
I was FINALLLYYY able to watch this, thanks to it and its sequel being added to Tubi. I honestly did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. The multiple chase sequences and the horror sequences are so well done (especially the first death which instantly became one of my favorite slasher moments), and the characters are a fun group to follow. I felt a lot of Urband Legend vibes, especially during the first couple of acts. However, the final act is where it starts to lose me. Certain reveals are portrayed in such over-complicated ways that distracts you from really being able to enjoy it. Plus, there’s a make out sequence that is edited as if it’s…
