Movies like this are exactly my jam. Abandoned medieval cathedrals, remote countryside valleys, doomsaying gothic atmosphere, a totally unnecessary amount of lore building, haunting church chorales, bloodsucking undead Templar Knights riding zombie horses in slow motion, and a completely out-of-left-field “holy shit” ending that has zero chill. Just awesome. And to think, it all started because a chick got mad at her friends and decided to Irish exit herself from a moving train.

A group of people visit an ancient village and accidentally awaken a bunch of (un)dead Templar Knights. Don’t you just hate it when that happens? This movie has some of the most amazing atmosphere I’ve ever seen. The slo-mo shots of the knights galloping on their AWESOME undead horses are just so haunting and beautiful. There’s a scene that takes place inside a photography studio that has the same excellent use of color and light (and zombie effects) as The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue. The music is equally amazing with its low key chanting and wailing.

I rank the nighttime, slow motion ride of the Knights Templar right up there with the rise of the Nazi Zombies from the ocean in "Shock Waves" as my favorite horror sequence/imagery of the 70's (a decade overstuffed with iconic horror scenes).
I love everything about this movie...with the still impressive and eerie make up effects, smart use of locations, first-rate soundtrack, and tons and tons of atmosphere more than making up for any shortcomings.

The undead knights looked pretty spectacular, and there were some wonderfully atmospheric night sequences (very misty, which I LOVE), but ultimately Tombs of the Blind Dead just fell short for me. The movie was far too dull. If only it had a couple more scenes of appendages being severed by swords. Also, this was a fairly chaste affair. They could have easily spiced things up with a bit of nudity/sex.
I still had good time with this though because I watched it with Michelle.

Ugh I should have watched this years ago but atleast now I understand the appeal. I really loved every single thing about this & it will easily become one of those movies I crave before bed like a yummy snack.

Anyway, there’s something so fucking pleasing about the medieval backstory, the abandoned temple ruins, tombstones rumbling in the night, fog rolling in...cloaked slow (extra slow) moving zombies!! It doesn’t get more atmospheric and dreadful than this. Pair that with the slow-burn style & well...it’s pretty fucking awesome!! Seriously I’m in love over here.

Truly some of the best looking zombies to have ever graced the silver screen—I will never get sick of these blind, slow-motion medieval monks! The script is wonky as hell but it makes up for it with its gold-star atmosphere and jaw-removing location shots. I could have done without the lengthy sexual assault scene towards the end, its bizarre aftermath is far more uncomfortable than any tit-gore or depiction of SA that came before it. Sure, it's a snapshot of that era's social norms and audience expectations, but that doesn't mean it's easy to ignore or doesn't completely take you out of the movie during the height of its 3rd act.

Atmosphere, atmosphere, ATMOSPHERE! The first and last acts of this undead templar nightmare are still some of the doomiest 'n' gloomiest vibes I've ever felt in a horror flick. Nothing beats watching these decrepit abominations, caked in mud, riding in slo-mo across empty ruins and fields, cutting up and cannibalizing fresh flesh, while the Gregorian onslaught continually bombards the senses. And the initial foggy shot when they first rise from their tombs, oh man, goosebumps for DAYS!
If only the middle act was able to keep up the tension, this would be dang near perfect. Not that it's bad or anything, especially that fiery sequence at the mannequin workshop which looks absolutely incredible, the story just gets a bit dragged…
This series is criminally underrated and mistakenly left out of “best horror franchises”. These blind dead aren’t traditional zombies, they’re skeletal, wrapped like mummies and seeking blood like vampires, yet they are skillful and behave more like ghosts. The precise term for these guys are “revenants” - animated corpses revived specifically to haunt the living. As it is also MY job to haunt the living, I thought I’d revisit all four films again and report back how they’re holding up in 2024.
