Rarely do you see a film that wants you to feel and understand the mental breaking point of a character while succeeding in it's task. Bedevilled painstakingly does it and much to the horror of it's audience, succeeds. It's not a pleasant viewing experience, but it shouldn't be. If as a viewer you'd be taking joy in the story that's unfolding in front of you, then the film makers would have failed their goal.

I really enjoyed this. Actually that's the wrong way to put it. I was riveted by it. There's a lot of interesting bits about the differences between urban South Koreans and those who live isolated lives on islands. The primary focus though is the vicious treatment of women both in a more modern Seoul and on a faraway island where women are treated as dogs. The older women perpetuate the vicious cycle that a man is superior to woman. It's so fucked up.

So this one caught me by surprise. I came in knowing absolutely nothing about the movie other than the poster. I thought this was going to be like a supernatural or possession film, and while one of our leads technically gets “possessed,” it ain’t by any evil spirit. In fact, the movie I got is basically a film Park Chan-wook never directed. Especially that ending, boy! When s**t hits the fan, it breaks the roof and leaves a huge hole in the process. Nope. This was some bullshit. I like to feel some kind of catharsis in my vengeance flicks and I was robbed of it. I'm almost the-end-of-Eden-Lake levels of mad right now. Over half of the movie was watching a woman deal with all kinds of abuse at the hands, feet, words, etc of these horrible people on an island. Like a Korean backwoods family or something. So after literally suffering through about an hour and twenty or so minutes of that abuse I was giddy with anticipation for her to enact vengeance.
