“Look! – There’s a light in the sanitarium! Maybe we can telephone from there!”

I love this movie! This has some real creepy asylum vibes! With that quote and the stormy night I suspect that the makers of Rocky Horror Picture Show was inspired by this movie.

The movie does have all the creepy vibes once everyone is at the asylum. Before that there’s some cute romance drama. My favorite is during the party when Johnny sees Amos arrive wearing a better suit than him, imported too 😂 Johnny’s expressions during that scene was great!

And then there’s Lon Chaney. MGM’s silent film king during the 1920s! His acting is so good that at first seeing him you’d think he is the good guy in this crazy sanitarium, but of course he’s the mad scientist. And according to TCM article this is one of the first films with a mad scientist. My favorite scene is when he’s just about to perform his little experiment and Amos tells him that he’s “mad.” Chaney’s acting when he shows Amos how much that angers him. I watched this about 5 years ago and I still love that scene!
