I think the final moments hit as hard as they do because Harold was never embracing reality before Maude's death. The loss of life freed constraints and personal imprisonments surrounding him, but each gesture, conversation, look, movement in the hospital is grounded before Cat Steven's musical accompaniment. He finally greeted the horror and beauty of death - and not just the image of it - with a song.
I have trouble articulating how much this movie means to me, but I’ll give it a shot...
Why is a movie about a suicidal 20 year old falling in love with an eccentric old lady my favorite movie of all time? It’s because I think it captures both my fears and my dreams, and literally lays out the blueprint for how to live a vivacious and fulfilling life.
Harold feels lost and misguided, obsessed with death as it is the only place he thinks he will be loved. While he is acting independently, he does things for the reactions of others. Maude is a free spirit who brings joy everywhere she goes. She lives entirely in the moment, not caring…

The all-too-brief shot of Maude's arm has stuck with me so much since I first watched this movie I would've sworn there was an entire minute dedicated to it. Off the wall screen time-to-impact ratio. Really special movie. Fascinated and charmed by the editing! Unbelievable Ruth Gordon didn't sweep every award for this.
If someone wanted to, they could make a gag Letterboxd list titled "old woman throws a gift from their very-young lover into the sea and passes away shortly thereafter" with this and Titanic. I'm not gonna do it. Couldn't handle all the adoration and success that would follow.
