Where East Is East

Golden Age Hooptober challenge with Lon Chaney’s last silent film. I’m marking this as a country challenge (Laos, though it’s an American film), and also a Diverse Film. This is white washed with American actors playing at being “Asian” but the actress that plays the daughter is one of the first successful Mexican actresses of her time and nicknamed “The Mexican Spitfire”, Lupe Vëlez.

“”I’d sooner see one of those tigers get you… than her.”

Is this a horror film? Maybe not but Madame de Sylva and “the East” countries has such supernatural powers that it causes Bobby (Lloyd Hughes) to very quickly forget that he’s madly in love & engaged within moments of meeting Madame. Also this is definitely a thing to watch because it’s Chaney’s last silent film before he acted in one “talkie” movie before he died. Tod Browning made this a silent film but also perfectly choreographed the animals noises with the movie so it’s almost a “talkie.”

Lon Chaney once again has some great facial makeup to make him look all scarred up to be “Tiger” Hayes, the animal hunter that catches tigers for a circus. His acting is really good. As this is my 7th movie I’ve seen with Lon Chaney I’m not surprised with how amazing he is and not just as a “horror icon.”
