There’s a ton of movies I could name that this feels directly inspired by, but by doing so, I’d be doing it’s originality a disservice—but to create some pathos, just as After Hours paved the way for Good Time, we have the next logical piece snapping into place with God’s Time. It’s a buddy comedy with a ton of heart, surrealist humor, and high tension drama. This is truly a special one.

God’s Time is a dark story about a suspected planned murder and the two goobers who are going to try a stop it. Main character Dev talks to us through the camera, explaining everything as it flies by. The fourth-wall breaking is beyond a gimmick, as it places us their world of addiction counseling and line reading for acting auditions; it prevents us from experiencing reality outside of their warped perspectives. This brilliant move makes for superbly impactful tone shifts, when the smiles and the jokes wear off, the sweat is pouring, and you begin to realize the weight of what is happening.

I hesitate to say much more, but I am awestruck by what was done here with what I assume was an incredibly limited budget. The amount of guts this film has speaks volumes about what is possible when you work a good idea to it’s potential. Stellar debut.
