The Integrity of Joseph Chambers
★★★★

Two aspects of this film really stood out. The first, impossible to ignore, is some of the most interesting sound design I have ever experienced. The sounds of this movie regularly break the diegesis allowing for a peek into the mind and maybe subconscious of main characters Joseph Chambers. This would break the immersion of the film if not done well, bet it is done flawlessly. The sounds of cracks of branches translate us to another world inside our character’s head. What begins as a simple wilderness movie becomes a thrilling psychological dream as the story progresses. These sounds work together with the editing to make a really cool experience.

The second aspect of this film that really stood out to me was the framing of certain shots. Everything is so meticulous, and while sometimes I don’t even notice shot framing. I couldn’t stop noticing awesome intricacies present throughout this film. There is a scene where Joseph is merely skipping rocks, and even there all of the throws end aesthetically in the very corner of the frame. There are so many moment like this.

I really enjoyed this. It starts as a simple drama but evolves into an anxious cautionary tale. I watched it with Samiha, she liked it, but I don’t think she liked it as much as me. It is definitely worth a watch though.

If you watched this and liked it, Tribeca played a similar film last year titled Wild Men which happened to be my favorite of the festival last year. I highly recommend that too.
