Fuck yeah, always Scissors over Knives.
Livid follows Lucie a trainee at-home nurse who with her boyfriend Will and his brother Ben decides to hunt for the treasure on Halloween night that is supposedly hidden in an old women's home but little did they know they are in for a long night of terror.
Let's start with the only minor flaws in the movie. I don't get these home intrusion movies, why are people always in a hurry, wouldn't it be good to at least have a look around that grim dark mansion in daylight to at least figure out various exits of the place rather than just breaking in like morons. I mean that place has solid metallic shutters…
Before there was Don’t Breathe and Abigail, the same French duo behind the delightfully brutal Inside delivered this story about a group of burglars who break into a house and end up encountering an evil that, of course, will f—ed them up.
Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury once again prove they have a very good handle on tone and atmosphere. The film takes its time getting started, and going in blind definitely works in its favor—the less you know, the more effective those early twists and reveals become. Once the characters finally enter the house, though, that’s when the film really kicks into gear.
The second half is where things shine. It leans fully into its horror roots, delivering a…

"The sun and moon don't want you. The humans down below want you even less. Your world is here... with me. Now dance."
This is my second watch of this film and it has stayed a favorite of mine. It has the perfect dark haunted feel to it; it’s very satisfying prior to becoming horror, and when it turns into a horror film, it is very dark in the best way.
Interestingly, this watch I even got spooked once or twice, and I hadn't remembered it being terribly frightening. It has some scares and some actual gore, which you couldn’t predict from the beginning whatsoever. I think this will be…
There was certainly a lot going on in this one, and I can safely say I understood at least 60% of it.
I love Bustillo and Maury so when this popped up on Shudder I had to give it a watch!
I’m not going to lie to you and say that it makes a whole lot of sense nor am I going to lie and say that it always moves at a consistent pace, BUT as usual with these guys there are some top notch scares and creepy visuals in a very unique vampire story all taking place inside a delightful haunted house so it definitely won me over. Between this and The Deep House, I feel like these guys are well on their way to being masters of creepy house movies and I love that.
Like with most of the other…

The touching story of two young ladies who team up to rip an old lady’s head off.
I talk about the French Extemist film Inside and its directors Maury and Bustillo a lot, and when you see my film, you'll see how much I love it. I know it's a horror movie that gets respect, but to me, it's an absolute landmark in horror.
So until Shudder released Livid just a few days ago, this was simply known as their follow-up film that had a massive amount of excitement to only be buried by creepy-pervert shitbag brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein who bought it out of festival and then didn't know what to do with it. For years I was so frustrated I couldn't watch it. It became the film that was only mentioned at conventions by…

Livid has come up in “confusing endings” conversations I’ve had with fellow horror fans or that I’ve read online. This was my first watch but I personally didn’t find it confusing, just duplicitous.
If you take it from the strictly “what you see” standpoint, Lucie and her friends have chosen the WRONG house to rob. This house of horrors is loaded with creepy stuff: mirror portals, taxidermy animals (and at least one human), stabby ballerinas, a laboratory for animatronic experiments and mysterious caterpillars that can transfer souls to a new body… all under the control of some mythical supernatural female creature.
While there, Lucie’s soul is transferred to the creature’s taxidermied daughter, Anna. Anna is now human and Lucie -…
I've been wanting to see this for so long and big thanks to Shudder for making this available in the US. This is the definition of a film that doesn't know when to stop. It starts off promising with its home invasion/haunted house premise but then a whole bunch of other ideas kick in, it starts to go off the rails and not in an entirely enjoyable fashion. I'm also not sure about some of the transitions and placement of flashbacks. That said though, the film is saved by a couple of fantastic moments. It contains some really compelling imagery, some chilling scares, and there's enough blood for the gore hounds. Had they made up their mind this could've been a much better film.
There is something about the visual of a little killer girl in a white bloodstained dress and sharp teeth that will always win me over.
