Pink Moon
★★★★½

This movie is Floor van der Muelen's feature debut, which makes the skilled level of filmmaking even more impressive than it already totally would have been from a seasoned director. The level of coordination and and control over all of the scenes, especially during some takes that get as long as over 10 minutes, is so impressive. When I was watching this movie, I had an almost perpetual feeling of awe at the level the entire production was working at. Because in addition to the incredible direction, the performances bring out so many emotions.

The subject matter is not a light one, but it is handled with grace. The story never feels exploitative or like it is trying to tell us the answers. Instead it just presents an issue by showing a family of humans trying to get through that issue. That sounds vague. I know. But the alternative is creating a manipulative narrative that tells the viewer what to think instead of allowing the viewer to experience the conflict with the character. The level of craft and graceful handling of assisted suicide, an endlessly challenging topic, made Pink Moon my favorite of Tribeca 2022 so far, and maybe just entirely!

Julia Akkermans, Floor van der Muelen, I was already lucky enogh to be able to thank you personally in the theater, but once again thank you for this beautiful and heart wrenching work!
