Gaudi Afternoon
★★★½

Skillfully employs film noir tropes just as readily as it subverts them, going with a literary translator as protagonist but keeping the jaded world view you'd expect from a hard drinking gumshoe. Judy Davis is pretty much perfect in the role. While comedic in nature, this still does a neat job of sticking to genre as the job she's tasked with by a mysterious stranger grows knottier with each new development. This doesn't have the firmest grasp on how to depict gender fluidity and the sentimental ending doesn't quite fit but this is still a fun, queer-friendly take on the detective movie.
