In early 19th century England, Mr and Mrs Bennet's five unmarried daughters vie for the affections of rich and eligible Mr Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr Darcy, who have moved into their neighbourhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to eldest daughter Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with second-eldest Elizabeth.

This version aired on television fifteen years before the renowned Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle adaptation of Jane Austen's famous book. As such, it shows its age, being rather studio-bound and stiff in its construction.
However, Elizabeth Garvie does come across as closer to Austen's conception of Lizzie Bennet than either Jennifer Ehle or Greer Garson in the Hollywood film.
Sabina Franklyn is particularly good as Jane, not a mouse but just a genuinely nice person, while Clare Higgins (Kitty), Tessa Peake-Jones (Mary), and Natalie Ogle (Lydia) are watchable as the remaining Bennet sisters.
Of particular interest though is David Rintoul's Darcy. Of a very different stamp to the brooding landowner of the 1995 version, he gives an extremely interesting portrayal, just as attractive in its way, and again, closer to the character depicted in the book. Others of note in the cast are Moray Watson as Mr Bennet, and Judy Parfitt as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
Mr. Darcy was legit an asshole who never smiled in the whole 5 hour runtime. Good adaptation! I like it way better than the Colin Firth one.

overall the characters in this rendition are as close to the book as you'll get in any of the adaptations so it's definitely worth the watch, even if this rendition suffers from a lack of young collin firth 💀 srsly you guys there is more to P&P than collin firth i promise you
The pacing felt a bit haphazard at times, but overall very charming. Easily has the best Mary and Mr Collins they were so funny I loved her manner of practicality as she delivers unknowingly out of pocket remarks and his bumbling energy. Even the way he walks is fantastic I know the actor was having a ball up in that bitch. The little turn he does before proposing to Elizabeth had me rolling on the floor.
And this Elizabeth I believe feels the most similar to how she actually is in the original work.

Austenesque irony
For me this production surpasses its more famous (and even sometimes over-hyped) successor.
With a sparkling screenplay by Fay Weldon, amongst its greatest strengths and there are many, are the wonderful characterizations. Elizabeth Garvie is a very pretty Miss Elizabeth Bennet indeed and delivers her witty lines with true Austenesque irony. Malcolm Rennie gives a delightful comic performance as Mr Collins and Priscilla Morgan captures the silliness of Mrs Bennet, played with far better measure than in the 1995 version, and are outstanding in an inspired cast.
I can imagine this 1980 production may appear slow of pace to some but I think its leisurely narrative captures far better the spirit of the original novel.
It remains, for me, the definitive screen version. If you love Austen and have seen only the 1995 BBC version, may I suggest you see give this one a try?

I mean, if you're going to make a miniseries, why not just film the entire book?
This is not the first miniseries to adapt Pride and Prejudice, but I'd be lying if I said I am any willing to watch something I am unable to log on letterboxd.
Adapted by PBS, this miniseries came 40 years after the last notorious adaptation, and very refreshingly. It stays true to the Austen's story's core and main plot points (oh how I missed Pemberley). And not all the changes are unwelcome.
For example, they establish Charlotte and Lizzie's friendship in a bigger manner than even the book does, and gives us certain insights in scenes that the novel lets us to our own…
The actress playing Lizzie has a nice energy to her, but these BBC adaptations feel just so very similar to each other that it's easy to forget which one you are watching. Still, make some tea and be lightly amused for a while.

with this version i think you really see elizabeth’s pride emphasised compared to other versions
