Sentenced to hang received catiii rating but to me it didn't contain that much elements to be on the same league as catiii. A known concept but presented brilliantly. This shocking flick is about greed & its outcome. The thing i liked most the way director Taylor Wong depicted pure emotions with subtle approch unlike other stupid catiii flicks. Tony (big Tony), Kent Cheng, Elvis Tsui were really the perfect cast for this flick. One the most morally strong film ive seen from hong kong. Brilliant.

Cult Movie Challenge 2025 #60 - Week 30: CAT III
Tamer than the average CAT III outing, as what we have here is a considerably high drama and well-executed retelling of an infamous murder case that occurred during the 1960s in Hong Kong, named the Three Wolves Case...aptly named because the killers used wolf masks and signed the ransom letters as Wild Wolf.
The characters are likeable enough, especially Kent Cheng Jak-Si's portrayal of the rather innocent Ma Yee-Charn. This family man genuinely did not want to be involved in such schemes, as he saw the danger from the beginning. To see him dragged under through sheer loyalty to his long-term friends, into an inescapable demise, is quite sad indeed.…
Hangin With the Boys
I keep seeing people refer to 'Sentenced to Hang' as the first CAT III film despite their being numerous CAT III films released before it. I think it's one of those cases where it's the first film to officially be given a CAT III rating. Films that were released before 'Sentenced to Hang' that also meet the criteria of a CAT III film were issued the CAT III rating at a later date. So technically, 'Sentenced to Hang' is the first film that was given a CAT III rating but not the first CAT III film ever made.
Not as outrageous or as violent as I was expecting but still a very good thriller. It's frequently…

This only sort of contains spoilers. It's pretty obvious by the title where the film is going.
The first Hong Kong film to receive the infamous CAT III stamp, Sentenced to Hang is not nearly as lurid as its rating (and its awesome poster) might suggest. There's a bit of nudity, some minor violence, and an overall grimness to the proceedings, but it's certainly not on the same level as CAT III's most famous nasties. That said, its depictions of execution is brutal and genuinely upsetting.
We follow a trio of childhood friends as they dig themselves into deadly trouble after kidnapping the son of a rich banker for ransom money. It has a star-studded cast with Kent Cheng, Elvis…
This is the original Category III film, the first to be released in Hong Kong with this certificate, with any films prior to this that we would think of Category III being retrospectively upgraded to the category. While it may be the first officially, it's not necessarily that explicit or violent, even in comparison with the films that preceded it, but has a much more serious tone in its desperation and punishing conclusion.
Supposedly based on a true story about three men getting in over their head, kidnapping (and then accidentally killing) a bosses son. It's a late night scheming fuelled by booze and bad decisions, that continue to escalate - a little bit of resentment bubbling up, until we're…
I need besties like this.
Who wants to get hung for their crimes with me?
Who wants sequentially marked graves with me?
Who wants to be mourned by crowds of children with me?
Who wants to embody the execution of Christ in praxis with me?

Week 30: CAT III Week
The notoriety of Sentenced to Hang pretty much hangs that it was the first film to officially receive the CAT III rating. Though when compared to others with the same rating, this is tame. Admittedly my interest waned with this, cutting in and out. It's slow building and at times dry. Steeped in crime thriller leanings and less on horror or even anything gruesome. Fails to love up to that great poster art.
The historical importance of this film is enough to justify watching it. Based on a real case, and being the first HK film to receive cat 3 rating, this film is intriguing.
Especially being directed by Taylor Wong, written by Johnny Mak, you can expect quality as they also worked on the Rich And Famous/Tragic Hero films, as well as the second 2 films in the Andy Lau Truth trilogy.
The film is very amusing and entertaining, some parts funny and humorous, while some thrilling and suspenseful, and the outcome being tragic and unfortunate. The film as a whole is full of life. I felt very entertained and engaged, even standing up from my seat a few times feeling the…
