On The Road: The Dutch Frontier - Windmills, Bicycles, Decks and Questionable Places
Starring: The Wicked, Charming, Dutch Icon Rutger Hauer
The film stars our man of the hour, Rutger Hauer, and provides a concise story of the infamous kidnapping of the Chairman and grandson of Heineken founder Alfred by four young men.
While I came into the film completely clueless of the event at hand, I found it to be sufficiently detailed to fill in the gaps. However, as I noted before, the film rushes over a lot of the tale, including the kidnapping itself, and focuses so little on Alfred that I felt Hauer was being completely squandered (even if he does get more to do in the…
This is not an entirely bad movie; the story is told with enough care, but at the same time it really drags on many occasions and is not as intruiging as it could have been. Add to that, some plot elements are totally unnecessary and distracting, like the 'romance' stuff. Some of the line delivery and acting is painfully cringeworthy, but it's also pretty decent at points - I'm not very familiar with Rutger Hauer but he's allright here. The four kidnappers are absolute d*cks, more than just unlikeable.
It's really the overall picture that just doesn't work well. I thought the movie almost ended, but then found out that I was only a bit past the halfway mark. It's filled with wasted elements between the moments that do matter and has some real cringy stuff. It's a pity that this isn't what it could have been. It's not awful but it's not what I wanted.
I rarely watch Dutch films just because they always seem to disappoint me, but I somehow had high hopes for De Heineken Ontvoering. It was a mess, sadly. I'm pretty sure they skipped over tons of stuff, which only left me confused at the end. I probably would've been better off by reading the Wikipedia page on the kidnapping.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Hauer gives an interesting performance amidst a predictable heist formula and unlikeable leads.
The actual sentence and prior prediction of same by the perps makes the climax very dissatisfying.
A Dutch film, based on the true events related to the kidnapping of the President of "Heineken Brewer Company". Rutger Hauer (Batman Begins 2005) plays Heineken, with facial expressions telling you everything that might've been happening inside the character's head. Those 3 weeks he spent in that cell after being kidnapped, his fear of suffocation and rather forgivable portrayal of real events, make it a better but not-so-thrilling experience. Hauer's exceptional expressions were worth paying attention to, and i must say his English is as much admirable as his German.
De Heineken Ontvoering also brings forward the power of a wealthy man and how some corporations can destroy some lives, probably knowingly (One of the kidnapper's father had given 20…
Entertaining and informative look at the events of 1983 when Freddy Heineken (Rutger Hauer) President of the Heineken brewing company was held captive for 3 weeks while kidnappers demanded a 35 million Guilders ransom (around £12.5 million) for his release.
It was never going to be a 'All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears...in rain' type of a performance from Rutger, Heineken just wasn't that kind of a man. But it's worth the watch if only to see how far an extremely wealthy mans influence can reach.
Julian Assange should watch and scrutinise this film carefully should he ever plan on venturing outside the grounds of the Ecuadorian Embassy.
je zou maar ontvoerd worden en het eerste wat je zegt is “ben je helemaal besodemieterd”
Gripping crime drama based on true events, it's nicely paced and the performances are solid. Never seen a film with Rutger Hauer speaking in his own language and he's just as commanding as he is when speaking English but without the scenery-chewing.
Soms kunnen Nederlandse films goed zijn!!!!! Like, écht goed, niet alleen vermakelijk.
Rutger Hauer, national treasure.
It's a really interesting story but it definitely could've been executed better. Music was great, Hauer was great, but some of the other actors overplayed their role a little. Didn't particularly care for the script and it felt a little all over the place. Would've liked to see more of this story from the police perspective.
Drink every time "Rem" hits someone in the face or threatens someone.
