Berlinale 2022 No.12

On that second Friday of the Berlinale, "Before, Now and Then (Nana)" was my fourth movie. Whilst that could have been a knock-out, Kamila Andini beguiled me from minute one. I dived deep into the 1960s in Indonesia and spend over 100 minutes with a women that lives in between the past (when her first husband went missing), the present (when she is in a forced marriage) and her future (no spoiler here).

Nana is another great contribution to the Berlinale competition of 2022 and I honestly try to be very critical, believe me. And that's why I have to admit that the great soundtrack here is used way to much. But the rest is simply beautiful. The scenes are shot with so much passion and an eye for the details, the story feels right and the feelings are honest.

A poignant narrative of a women looking for love and finding her freedom from it. Sadly this probably won't find its way to the theaters so I am very glad to have had the privilege of watching this.
