Alcarràs presents an abundance of characters, but director Simón gives every single one of them sufficient enough space to leave their mark. When an old mistake by the grandfather of a family of peach farmers comes to the surface their agricultural way of life is jeopardized. The ensuing identity crisis experienced by four generations makes for a heartfelt character study in the Catalan countryside. The cast of non-professionals and tranquil pacing give the film a remarkable authenticity. No showy family reconciliations, but under the skin frustrations that only come to the surface occasionally as intimate moments of doubt and pain. A silent slap in the face, children singing for their heartbroken grandfather, son Roger taking revenge on his father for not seeing him. Plenty of small stories that work towards an ending that will leave you in shreds. Throughout Europe farmers have protested about the pains of the rapid adaptation required of them in the face of climate change. Alcarràs makes their plea tangible.
