In 1920s Ireland young doctor Damien O'Donovan prepares to depart for a new job in a London hospital. As he says his goodbyes at a friend's farm, British Black and Tans arrive, and a young man is killed. Damien joins his brother Teddy in the Irish Republican Army, but political events are soon set in motion that tear the brothers apart.

Revolutions are not clean. The British occupation of Ireland was barbaric and brutal. Whilst The Wind That Shakes the Barley may be exaggerated according to some, it is hard to deny the oppression Ireland faced during centuries of occupation. Irish independence is still a prickly topic, but British actions in the 1920s were wrong and Ken Loach is brave for unequivocally showing that in his film, although it's sad that it does require bravery to highlight anti-imperialist sentiments.
As a film The Wind That Shakes the Barley is one of unrelenting terror and bloodshed, filled with constant chaos. The working class accents and dialects are keenly preserved, all shouting over each other as debate and war never stops. However what…

The big complaint seems to be the one-dimensional portrayal of the Black-and-Tans, but as I am not a fan of genocidal imperialists, I am not one to mind that particular aspect of this film. Instead, my complaint is the one-dimensional portrayal of everyone else, all of them more or less just political mouthpieces. Granted, the acting is decent and the politics of some of them (the socialists) are so in tune with my own that I am more forgiving of it. This film is rooted in history and folk tradition (notably, once more, the music), and it has a lyrical quality to its wide view of the famous greens of Ireland.
