jules and jim is a love story about two bisexual men who, too shy to become lovers, remain besties and fall in love with an absolutely unhinged cool girl who’s motto is to gaslight every moment, gatekeep every day, and girlboss beyond words.
I love how excited this movie is about how it works under its own rules. Truly unapologetic with it's style which is probably why it has that status of being one of the greatest to come out of the french new wave. Won't deny that it doesn't feel as though it sticks the landing. It also works at a very fast pace and trying to process all of the beautiful writing scattered throughout gets pretty overwhelming. That's more at the fault of my comprehension skills than the film. What I'm trying to say is that I am going to watch as many french new wave films as I can during quarantine because after dealing with the headache that is Avid Media Composer over the last 24 hours, losing yourself in this kind of filmmaking feels like a warm shower.

But this month the World Cup came along, and I fell in love with the beautiful game. Holy fucking shit I hate Catherine. I hate her so much that I can't even look at this film fairly and give it a legitimate rating. Her character sucks so much. None of this would fly today and it just made me furious that it happened here.

They exchange paintings and books, see plays, sing songs and play music, recite poetry from memory and translate passages into French and German. They mean to understand life through art. When Catherine on impulse plunges into the river, does she give Jules and Jim their first life-as-art experience?
