Wow, I really don't understand the mostly-average reviews this film has on this site -- this film was amazing. Almost everything about it was amazing. Hilary Swank was fantastic, which means a lot because normally I don't enjoy her films. All the children in the classroom were very captivating; I grew emotionally attached to each one of them. The purpose and subject matter of this film was very engrossing to me -- racial injustice, especially when it comes to youth that don't get fair opportunities, is an issue I care about immensely. The story line quickly drew me in, as it was very emotionally gripping -- I teared up a bit on more than one occasion. And I was so…
It is very easy to disregard Freedom Writers on the grounds of its white saviour narrative, but it would be a shame to overlook this true life tale of a teacher going against bigoted, elitist colleagues in order to fight the corner of a class of underprivileged youths so that they receive a standard of education they’re so cruelly deprived of.
Freedom Writers features a curriculum of moving subjects, prompting a class divided to settle their grievances, find a shared commonality, and seek resonance in the plight experienced by prejudiced figures throughout history. There is an immense level of care from Swank’s Ms Gruwell and she delivers a commanding and passionate performance in the role. I like stories with a…
