Another ascetic sinner from Schrader. Shares the same muted colors and the same understated, but intense acting style as First Reformed. I didn’t like it quite as much as that film. Oscar Isaac is good and Tiffany Hadish share an odd chemistry. You keep expecting Hadish to break out of the understated style and that tension works. It’s interesting to see Schrader rework the structure of Taxi Driver over and over. It seems as he reworks the story, it’s less about sin and redemption and more about finding a purpose and a direction in morally neutral and meaningless world.
