This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The only funny thing about this movie is the idea that someone would give up sleeping with women to date the goateed cry baby which is Ben Affleck.
Remember when that one straight guy you know baked you a cake shaped like a naked woman with huge breasts on your birthday, and you were totally okay with it and laughed hysterically together?
Yeah. Me neither.
Chasing Amy exists in a world where straight people are allowed to be abrasively, disgustingly rude toward queer people with absolutely no repercussion. Apparently you can just lob insults and ignorance at us all day long and we’ll still wanna be your friend. Hell, maybe we’ll even want to date you.
Hey. Straight dudes. Lesbians don’t wanna fuck you. They won’t fall in love with you. And god fucking dammit, lesbians don’t sit around drinking wine and mourning the loss of so many gay women who have gone and fallen in love with men.
Another one bites the dust, eh? Bite my ass.
I wish I could track down every single copy of this movie and destroy them all.
This movie isn’t that old but it feels like it belongs to an ancient era of history, one future scholars may look back on and call “The Snootchie Boochie Age.”
when ben affleck was woke for 2 minutes and then went back to being a total dick 😩
Pains me to say that you can actually sort of see Kevin improving as a director in this. Nothing special by any means but his camera actually emphasizes dramatic moments instead of just sitting there waiting for an actor to do it and there's even a marginally compelling structure to it (the mirrored opening and closing scenes kind of work). However, none of it really matters because its all in service of the most mind-numbingly stupid idea for a movie anyone has had. It's the painfully obvious self-revelation that sexuality and relationships are complicated and messy that most have when they're teens (and that Smith apparently had when he was 25) but taken to some weird, geek fantasy extreme where…
There was a time when, if you had the sudden compulsion to watch Chasing Amy, you literally had to go out and rent a DVD copy from the video store (or buy a used Criterion edition from Goodwill) and then put the DVD in your DVD player. In the old days, this cumbersome process would have been enough to destroy any curiosity. But now, if it's right there on the front page of a streaming site...
Famously, Smith made this movie to work through the pain of knowing that his real-life girlfriend Joey Lauren Adams had a more extensive sexual history than him. This fact, like the film itself, has Aged Poorly™, although I found the movie somewhat interesting as…
