Reminiscence
★★

Started out promising with how it seemed it was going to explore themes of nostalgia and people trying to cling to something that will give them comfort in a depressing world.  The drabness of the real world was contrasted by the warmth of the inhabitants memories, and the 2 leads’ romance felt as if it was the only light in their otherwise depressing lives. Both of these told effectively through the visuals. Which would have been much more interesting than whatever we got.

Sadly, as the film went along, every single piece of substance that was at least ok crumbled before my eyes. It was replaced by copious amounts of exposition and philosophical mumbo jumbo delivered in boring, monotone voices that only left me with a feeling of confusion and hollowness by the end. They couldn’t even have a single fun and shocking reveal, seriously! Each reveal left me without a single hint of shock or interest.

Was there anything at least decent here? Ya! Despite what I said about how the actors delivered their lines I don’t blame them for that. I think that most of the actors were actually trying to make this awful dialogue work. Instead I blame the terrible directing and writing by Lisa Joy, who boldly copies much better films, making you want to watch those instead. The score was decent. Nothing incredible yet it gets the job done. I liked the setting of the film and would have liked it to be explored more without vague conversations about being in the army. And some of the shots are nice. Oh yeah and the poster is cool.

P.S. I didn’t know what the plot was of the movie which is why I thought the plot would focus on the romance.
