not to be that thirsty bitch but i want to liquify rotoscope gta looking keanu reeves and inject him into my veins heroin-style
Perhaps the most indescribably evocative film ever made, functioning on both an emotive and formal level, it's a comedy until it stops being funny. Linklater's achievement is essentially unmatched in the medium of animation.
Film #10 of 'It's June Jim, but not as we know it.'
A Scanner Darkly is perhaps the most faithful Philip K. Dick adaptation I've ever seen. It is my favourite novel of his, a mind bending, deeply emotional and autobiographical Science Fiction novel and I guess that's why I never bothered with this adaptation. I truly respect Linklater's attempts to stay as close to the original even though he unfortunately favours form over content.
Linklater's rotoscopic technique is a bit of a double edged sword for me here. I loved how the animation made me share in how all the druggies in the film view the world. It is a kaleidoscopic experience, sometimes with a surreal world, sometimes with…
i had every intention to say something about martyrs and scapegoats and victims of (supposedly) architectonic goals & ideologies, but then the film concluded with an excerpt from Philip K. Dick's afterword, which made me cry in a very sad & helpless way. i found the entirety of the afterword after finishing the movie, which i'll paste below when i finish rambling. but i'd like to first pull some snippets both adapted for the film & not included:
"This has been a novel about some people who were punished entirely too much for what they did. They wanted to have a good time, but they were like children playing in the street; they could see one after another of them being killed—run over,…
People who don't like - or can't appreciate - this film are nothing but a bunch of shape-shifting-albino-lizard-bitches!
Honestly don't know what to feel about this. I know I enjoyed it. I also know I probably won't remember this movie that much.
I tend not to cotton as much to Linklater's occasional digressions into pessimism (I still need to revisit BEFORE MIDNIGHT but as of now I find its oversimplification of once-rich characters into petty, hyper-gender-specific squabblers to be a great disappointment). But from A SCANNER DARKLY's grim opening, which tacitly updates Rory Cochrane's good-natured stoner from DAZED & CONFUSED as a total burnout hallucinating bugs forever crawling over his skin, the deep cynicism and dejection is balanced by Linklater's natural sense of humor. Indeed, what I loved most about the film, apart from how beautifully the rotoscoped animation captures the fluidity of Dick's prose, is how it reorients Linklater's penchant for run-on philosophical chat as addict-speak.
This is especially true of RDJ's…
A very interesting movie.
I remember seeing it when it came out, and loved it, and then completely forgetting about it.
Well, I've been watching through some Woody Harrelson movies lately, because he is a favorite actor of mine, and this came up, and I was like OH YEAH
Couldn't find it anywhere, might be streaming somewhere, but I ordered it from a local library.
Support your local libraries! ❤️
Put it on today after my work out, and enjoyed it a lot again.
Literally has 4 of my favorite actors in it, in Woody, Keanu, RDJ and Ryder.
I love the animation style. My wife said it was giving her a headache, and I can totally see that angle…
I was not expecting this movie to be so DENSE. People constantly living within their own disillusions about having faith in destructive surroundings and technology they thought would help them. Addiction of drugs presenting itself as a potential metaphor for how people become physically sick for being so addicted to the technology/ drugs they thought would help them escape their unsatisfied lives. Longing for trust, but constantly exposed to betrayal and manipulation. One that longs for agency that eventually becomes another means to an end to keep a secure status quo alive. A status quo power at the top comes from how those at the bottom behave. Constantly confused by the their perception of reality. Longing to escape the lens that supplies them with temporary satisfaction. Breaking down into another tool that keeps the status quo alive. I am fucking scared. Found my new favorite Keanu performance.
