Imagine seeing this only a few months after Watson and company were arrested for the Tate-LaBianca murders. If you want, replace that with more recent murders to get a sense of how scandalous, how tasteless, how tacky this was. Add to that the idea of John Waters doing anything depicting Jesus Christ (with Edith Massey as the Virgin Mary) intercut with Divine being fucked with a rosary. Include bicycle seat-sniffing, vomit-eating, and a brazen mockery of 1970s values and views on homosexuality and normalcy. Film it with little regard to convention, a mixture of awkward and inventive camera angles, and performances that drip with histrionics. And then, there's a lobster.
I've written before about how Waters' films tend show more…
"And then, to my horror and amazement, the Infant of Prague appeared before me! Oh, his angelic gaze hypnotized me! I was dumbstruck! How had he gotten to Bond street?"
Jesus might have died as a sacrifice for our sins, but Divine got raped by a 15-foot lobster after having a rosary shoved up her ass just for the sake of art. This is how I know who to pray for each day.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Re-watched this film after 28 years (I'm so fucking old) because I'm meeting John Waters in about a week as part of the Provincetown Film Festival. Was going to rewatch Female Trouble as well but just read that a Criterion version is releasing on 6/26.
Anyhows... I haven't had that much fun watching a film in a while. The couch scene that leads to Cookie Mueller being shot had me laughing so hard that my girlfriend thought I was tripping.
And the Criterion restoration is A++++++++. Picture and sound are crisp clean and you know that negative must have been beat to crap. Kudos to the Criterion restoration team.
Watched on the Criterion Channel on FilmStruck.
“It was then that I realized that she was using her rosary as a tool of erotic pleasure!”
only a John Waters film would coin the term “rosaryjob”.
so obscene, so irreverent, so ludicrous... so much fun!!!!!! Waters is just too good for this world we don’t deserve him
Divine is one of the great movie stars of American cinema. She overwhelms the camera like few others ever have. Waters liked comparing Divine's drag presence to that of Godzilla and that's an appropriate point of reference. They have a similar ethos of stomping and destroying anything and everything that has the unfortunate luck of coming into their path, and like Godzilla, I can't help but love the monster. May Divine reign forever.
This is the best movie in the whole wide world I wish I could give it more stars.
Mink Stole having lesbian sex with Divine in a church using a rosary (rosary job?? Oh my god) and calling herself a religious whore????? Then performing last rites and saying it’s like fucking Jesus…killing cops, fantasies of killing Shirley Temple and Ronald Reagan and Barbara Streisand. Then ending with divine going on a maniacal Godzilla-esque rampage….
I cannot believe something so perfect exists John Waters you are trill asf
