the deep-focus shot in which montgomery clift first sees elizabeth taylor is pretty much the movies, more or less. not that i feel compelled to get it tattooed on the side of my shaved head, or anything.

As confrontational and hallucinatory as mainstream Golden Age Hollywood ever got. A resounding expression of repression, desire, and rage right underneath the surface. The most perfect collision of acting styles at exactly the right time in movie history. Just a powerhouse.

It’s so evident that Clift and Elizabeth were soulmates from the beginning. In this film, you can see how their natural chemistry shines through each scene together and, later, when Clift’s career went through a difficult time, Elizabeth Taylor’s unwavering support was truly extraordinary and very rare in the industry. She literally saved his life once and they exemplify the essence of platonic love.

The moment where Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift are confessing their love to each other while dancing cheek to cheek among her society friends and she suddenly remembers they’re in public and she gasps, says “are they watching us?” and runs out the back door with him... CINEMA.

we need to normalize and immortalize Montgomery Clift alongside Marlon Brando and James Dean. The Brando Clift Dean aka The Big 3 aka the BCD. uhhh yeah can i get the BCD Special. that’s when an actor is method, at least a 3 on the Kinsey Scale, smolders in a tight white t-shirt, and has some puncturing things to say about the fallacy of the American Dream. a lot of guys out there think they are serving BCD Special! they are not. but it’s understandable to aim for that place in the sun…

There's a scene in "A Place in the Sun" when Elizabeth Taylor is about to declare her deepest feelings to a man at a crowded party and she stops and looks (very nearly at us, the viewer) and cries, "Are they watching us?!" before ushering her lover away to a secluded balcony. Despite her beauty and charm, love continues to elude Taylor...just like us schmucks in the audience. It's a moment befitting her character, a young socialite who winds up in all the papers, but also speaks to Taylor the star, hounded her whole life by flash photography and the salacious appetite of the public. It's a moment I found terribly moving—I found the whole film terribly moving.
