The vastness of human history is so great, not even movies can capture it all. But hey, that hasn't stopped us from trying!
I compiled this list that takes us through human history chronologically. I wanted to pick films that you can watch and get a feel for what that culture was like; what that war was like. I have listed dates and event info in the detailed list view, please use the list view. I think Lists on Letterboxd can be creative and interesting, and even educational. This can be a great tool to fill in a blank spot in your knowledge of the history of the world.

Of course, historical films are still films, not history. They should be a jumping off point to learn more about the period. I'm currently including links to Wikipedia on each entry so you can learn more about the real history.
I also am weary of propaganda films (looking at you, Soviet Union), who used historical figures to push their own modern agendas. These might still be interesting from a historic perspective, but if you see a movie here that is blatantly propagandic, let me know and we can find a suitable replacement. I'm striving for historically neutral movies (which don't exist), but will settle for ones that aren't overly patriotic.
I need help completing the list. I am missing quite a bit from early human history. I want to represent all continents equally, but naturally, I am finding the most from European history. If you have suggestions, please use the comments below, but please explain why your suggestion is historically significant. I am trying to limit each specific event/period to one or two movies, give or take. Here is the criteria for how I picked what deserves a spot:
1. Historical accuracy. It should depict the period as accurately as possible. Plot doesn't matter if era is correct.
2. Tone and atmosphere. Usually movies try to capture the atmosphere/attitude of the people of this era. "The Seventh Seal" captures the gloom and blind faith that comes out of the Crusades and plague. "Life of Brian" and "Dr. Strangelove" lampoon their respective eras, but in doing so, reveal the details of them in greater detail than movies that play it straight.
3. Authenticity. Modern history was actually recorded with film. "Bicycle Thieves" isn't a real "historical film", but it shows post-war Italy in more authenticity than any historical fiction ever could.
4. Historical significance. Focus on world shaping events and times, rather than inspirational people or innovations.
That's about it. This list was fun for a history nut like me and opened me up to some movies I hadn't heard of. I put a lot of time into this list, so I hope you enjoy it!
