Searching for Sugar Man

Jess isn't much of a movie watcher but she does love a documentary, especially if it is about a musician. This was one of the first movies she ever told me about that she liked. Music docs arent usually my favorite genre but seeing it won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature that year did intrigue me.

Today is Jess's birthday, and one of the gifts I got her was the Searching for Sugarman Blu-Ray. She loved it. After our…

Marty Supreme

It took me multiple viewings of Uncut Gems to fully lock in to its greatness and the Safdie way of doing things. I'd like to thank those multiple viewings for allowing me to fully enjoy Marty Supreme to its fullest extent on the very first go.

Timmy is on fire in this. I'm not even a Timmy super fan but Marty Supreme might just turn me into one. I don't even see Timmy in this movie, he is Marty Mauser.…

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

As a go back through some of Spielberg's filmography I'm struck by how much The Fablemans unlocks everything. I couldn't help but see Michelle Williams's portrayal of his mother in the Teri Garr performance. I was trying to map Richard Dreyfuss onto his dad but I didn't really get there and that's because I think Roy Neary has more of Spielberg himself in him. Laser focused on one thing almost to the point of insanity—his family would probably say past…

Criterion Challenge 2026 - 24/52: 1990s

If you show me dynamite in the first act then you better damn well explode said dynamite in the third act...

I found this to be pretty boring. I couldn't find a way in with any of the characters and the movie felt like a rough draft of a first feature. Plot threads are introduced and abandoned quickly. The story is aimless at best. There are some good scenes in a silo but they…

Scavenger Hunt 100 - 21/31: A movie in a theater that was released this year

I feel like the trailer was kind of misleading which led me to be slightly let down on this first viewing. Only slightly though because I very much enjoyed the film and the 3 hours totally flew by. The one scene I was anticipating (the bomb drop) didn't disappoint in the slightest. What an amazing achievement.

The performances across the board are excellent. Cillian Murphy…

Sinners

It feels so good to walk out of the theater and feel like your hype was justified. Coogler 100% delivers on everything the promotional material promised in the lead up to this release. Doing that is pretty hard and if Sinners was just that I'd still be quite positive on it. The thing is though, Coogler ALSO delivers on an entire second movie that was basically absent from the promotional stuff. AND, he weaves the two parts together seamlessly to…
