Back in 2014, Cinemonster curated his own horror marathon challenge with a few set of rules and invited anyone & everyone in the community to go for it with their own choices of horror films. The response was far better than what he anticipated and by the time it was over, Hoop-Tober had become a Letterboxd sensation.
A year later, he returned with Hoop-Tober 2.0 with a new set of rules. Even more people took part this time, making it an even bigger hit than the first edition. The word kept spreading. The legend kept growing. People became more n more restless in their wait for the next edition. Yet there was no other choice but to wait. For next October.…
For next October.
By the time Hoop-Tober 3.0 went live, it had stopped being just another LB challenge and had now become an integral part of Letterboxd, as exclusive to its members as any of their features. And it attracted a horde of old timers & newcomers. The rules were getting more varied but most people still followed it to a tee, leaving the last two editions in the dust.
And before you knew, it was time for Hoop-Tober 4.0. More rules. Special mention for those who were willing to go the extra mile. And just like last 3 years, Letterboxd was enveloped in nothing but screams, blood, guts & horror for 45 days. This yearly event was getting out of hand. More n more people were embracing the darkness and taking part. And as always, there was no stopping it.
This year marks the 5th anniversary of Cinemonster's brainchild and my 5th time participating in the ritual. Apart from an amazing way to watch & review all the horror films that had been sitting in my queue for a long time, Hoop-Tober is also the event where I push myself by taking things up a notch to review 31 horrors in 31 nights. Having successfully made it past the finish line on 4 previous occasions, I'm back for yet another ride.
The following horror films are the ones I have chosen for my contribution to Cine's Hoop-Tober 5.0 and will start reviewing from October 1st onwards. However, some films in the list may get replaced with a different entry during the course of the month, depending on either my mood or their availability. To those taking part for the first time: Welcome to the Madness. To other old timers like me: Let's have a spooky month & a half, shall we? All the best to everyone. And now, let the nightmares begin.
