this is a really great film if you want to watch jeffrey combs in tight pants stumble down hills like a newborn fawn learning how to walk
A super silly Lost World type of jam from Fred Olen Ray, starring Robert Quarry, Jeffrey Combs, Michelle Bauer and Sybil Danning. I love how the movie starts off with a notice from Ray stating that the story is completely true, and then the opening scene has a mutant cave cannibal decapitate some random dude. The Phantom Empire then proceeds to show some dinosaur action (a la Ray Harryhausen), robot action (literally Robby the Robot), nip slip action (Danning) and face-licking action (Bauer 👅 > Combs).
In other words; clean, wholesome fun.
im not gonna pretend this movie isnt kinda boring but consider this: dawn wildsmith in a cowboy hat, squinting & rubbing her chin with a gun like the cop in plan 9
jeffrey combs’ balls were in this so frequently i expected them to be listed in the end credits as their own entity
Looking for a few laughs?
The plot here is essentially Journey To The Center of The Earth (1959). But this is Fred Olen Ray directing, so expect something a little more like television’s Land of The Lost, but for adults. Think less Jules Verne and more Sid & Morty Krofft. For adults.
It’s typical B-movie stuff, and Ray is his typical bite-off-more-than-he-can-chew AND no-attention-to-detail self. For example, you can see lighting equipment in the frame on a number of scenes, and the underground “empire” has a lush blue sky. The difference between a good B-movie and a Fred Olen Ray movie are these lazy gaffs, but at least with Ray you’re guaranteed sexy ladies and cheap dad jokes!
Jeffrey Combs is a…
why is the leader of a group of cavewomen a leather-clad dominatrix? how did their ship crash into the center of the earth?? why was jeffrey combs not the one to get kidnapped and spitroasted? i am obsessed with every last detail of this movie
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
this was a goddamn masterpiece:
-the credits were inexplicably spliced into the first 10 minutes of the movie, leaving me wondering if they were ever actually going to end
-jeffrey combs rocked the tightest jeans imaginable
-killing the robot with the compact mirror...dare i say weaponized femininity
-just...the entire robot scene
-however much tiddie you're expecting, multiply it by two
-eddie said lesbian rights!
-remarkably terrible stop motion dinosaurs
-sexy big sword alien lady
-i know i've already mentioned jcombs' jeans but i'm mentioning it again. Give His Dickprint An Oscar
If I had to review Fred Olen Ray's work on a scale of conventional entertainment, most of it wouldn't rate very highly.
Before I knew who he was, I found a film like EVIL TOONS dull and plodding (which it is) and could only view it in the context of it being a 'rip-off', especially when you consider there's a cartoony dog man on the cover that's on-screen for maybe 30 seconds? It's called EVIL TOONS and there's only ONE toon!
But once I heard Fred Olen Ray talk about how difficult EVIL TOONS was to pull off (Thanks to the commentary track!), that a joke was stolen from the Bowery Boys, or that he made a movie by using…
