Film #34 of The Chain Reaction Challenge
Look, I have to be honest; I did not expect to love The Blob. Even when people recommended it to me, I thought "Oh yeah, it could be fun, if a little cheesy." But it was so much more than that.
This is a basic but near-flawlessly executed story about a "thing from space and the government wants to control it." But this is no E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The Blob loves to fuck shit up. And boy, does he?
The practical effects for the kills in this are really fucking glorious. The first one, where the blanket is pulled back, was a wonderful surprise. The Thing gets hailed as the film with the best practical effects, and rightfully so, but not enough people talk about this film.
It featured good performances from the two leads, Shawnee Smith and Kevin Dillon (Drama!), the latter of which is also rocking an epic mullet.
There are some weak moments when the film needs to use CGI, but other than that, this is pretty close to being a damn masterpiece for me.
