Hoop-tober VII Chapter Fourteen: All By Ourselves, Part V
Yeah, I dunno if found footage is my thing. There’s a couple of fun sequences for sure, but a lot of the tension gets lost under the shaky cam and the contrivance of “immediacy” within what is still a visibly scripted and conventional zombie story. Much as it makes me feel like a philistine, I generally prefer my horror a little more polished in look and feel. I’ll probably watch Paranormal Activity at some point, revisit the original Blair Witch, and then call it quits on the subgenre.
On the positive (?) side, there are specific elements that could not have been more prescient and relevant if they tried: the quarantine, of course, and the ongoing anti-Asian bigotry. Those aspects, plus the brisk pace, at least kept this one from ever getting boring.
